I am a serious smeller. As a kid I remember getting teased for sniffing things. If you had a set of the fancy Mr. Sketch Smelly Markers I was at your mercy. Certain scents bring me such comfort and joy.
Aromatherapy has been so interesting to me for many years. My boys grew up with lavender oil being rubbed on their feet and sleepy mist being sprayed over them to bring good dreams. When they were sick I gave them Thieves oil blend and diffused healing oils in their rooms. Orange oil in the car for nausea started when I was pregnant and I kept it for their car sickness years when their inner ears were wonkey. My ex wasn't a believer and joked I was a witch but plant oils have been used by so many cultures for years for remedies I felt strongly they could do no harm and generally the scents were beautiful.
There is also heaps of research on how they work available if you are up to some reading. I found a really well written piece on the wonderful blog Intoxicated On Life called A Skeptics Guide to Essential Oils and How They Work. For the past year or so I have had lots of comments from people on the plant oils I have been wearing and some people are really drawn by them. I wear them for my sanity and enjoyment but I get many people saying things like: you smells so good, or you smell like the spa or I love your Kerry smell. I am the same with my my friend Jaye from Bare Nature Products, she creates divine soaps and lotions and often smells like the oils of the scents she has been working with. I have also had some negative reactions from people sensitive to some scents like patchouli that I really like in blends in the colder months. I have taken notes on the specific, stronger scents I have been wearing when someone sensitive is affected.

Creating a custom blend for me to wear, and some specific blends for women on a journey to follow their bliss which is the mantra of this blog, has been on my to do list for a long while. There are lots of oils around and companies selling oils are popular now but I wanted to find an expert on oils and aromatherapy, I sought an aromatherapist. Luckily there was a wonderful lady named Sandra Detwiller in my area, she was part of the Arise Wellness team which is where I also practice yoga and go for chiropractic treatments, and we had a great connection. Valley EsSentials is in a quiet studio, serene in the upper level. Her energy was wonderful and her knowledge was vast. My first visit we did a consult and she created me a custom blend to help with what I wanted to work on that day and she gave me the most relaxing, nurturing aromatherapy massage. Since I have also tried an aromatherapy facial and it was equally divine and left my skin glowing. I knew she understood me and my goal to create some blends to share so we spent a good amount of time discussing scents and of course smelling oils. Often there was more than one suitable oil for the emotion I wanted to work on so it was a process having her explain the qualities of the similar oils and then smelling how they combine with the others I had already chosen for the blend.
I also enjoyed pulling aromatherapy insight cards much like you would with tarot cards and a fortune teller. The cards I pulled were astonishingly so on par with the results I was seeking. The first time I even went through the deck while Sandra was blending to affirm there were many others that were not at all suitable for the results I was seeking at this time.
We came to create the first two blends I will be offering for sale soon via the blog and etsy. Each is a very regulated, top secret combination of amounts of the divine plant oils listed. I have been using them for several weeks and kept them on me and find them to be true to what I was trying to create. Others I have tested them on also have had really positive reactions. The blends below will sell for $30 for a 15ml roller of pure, high grade oils blended to wear.
Here is, in Sandra's words how she came to practice...
I began this journey like everyone else; with great love and appreciation of scent, and a yearning to find natural alternatives to keep in my medicine cabinet. I would use oils like lavender or tea tree, but didn’t have a real understanding of what I was using, or how much I should be using.
When my son was born, he had a terrible case of eczema on his face and body and was given a prescription for cortisone cream. His little face was always flared and weeping. I was gifted a custom blend from my step mom whose Aromatherapist (now my Aromatherapist) created to help him. It wasn’t an overnight cure, but I knew we were on the right track. I also knew that energetically, there was something very special about this blend. I’ve come to understand that each and every blend is poured with thought, purpose, intention, care, & love. When you blend from the heart, you connect to oils, and to your client.
I later had a blend created for me that significantly impacted my emotional health and well-being. At the time, among many life transitions, I was also experiencing anxiety. At times I felt crippled by it. Using my blend was a way to shift to a state of calm; almost immediately.
I eventually began my Aromatherapy training and that is when my awareness and appreciation of this art deepened immensely. It quickly became clear to me that I would be creating customized, holistic blends that balance ~ mind, body, & soul. Each and every blend is poured specifically for each client; and their unique set of circumstances. While there are some beautiful generic blends that many find pleasing, there is nothing quite like having a unique-to-you custom blend.
Offering aromatherapy treatments (aromatic facials and relaxation massage) has been a very humbling experience. The entire session is based upon the consultation and the energetic, physical and emotional properties of the chosen oils. To be sharing this gift with others, and see the results first hand of their responses and deeply relaxed states, I am filled with gratitude and joy. It is truly an honour.
