Just beyond the crashing waves on the calm morning waters here in Nuevo Vallarta there are some pretty amazing paddle boarding conditions. I have been lucky to get out a couple of times with a new friend Corinna on her boards. Gentle swells rise and fall, the sun sparkles through the ocean water and we paddle, chat, and explore. Jet skiers sometimes fly by ridiculously close and we curse...but lets stick to the nice stuff.
The first day we found a cluster of sting rays swimming. BUT today we were out quite far...far enough to almost not be visible from shore, and we saw lines of bubbles that required exploring. The bubbles were made by thousands of silver fish swimming in a line. Corinna recognized it as a bait ball and we hoped we would see some dolphins surface....or maybe a nice grey whale!
It became almost impossible to keep our distance and watch. The darn fish kept following us, creating small white caps as there were so many moving so quickly. We were fascinated but I got a bit worried as it's also killer whale season here. I pointed out at least I was wearing a black rashguard and they would think I was one of their own and not munch me...but Corinna was quick to clarify I actually looked more like a seal...a favourite orca treat!
That's when I said I would like to head closer to shore but do you think we could get away from the darn manic fish? They were all around us creating jacuzzi like bubbles and they followed us almost all the way back.
Sadly we didn't get to see our dolphins yet on the other hand we didn't get eaten by a predator fish which was likely the cause behind all this little fish mayhem.
Feeling all brave after that experience, I tried once again to ride a big wave in...and once again I had a grand wipe out. At least my boys were there this time to enjoy it...I hate to waste a good wipe out. Best part of my holiday so far was the grand finale...my eldest coming out and asking if I could take him out. So off I went again but the wind was up and the water was choppy so I was much more cautious this time out with my boy. There is nothing more special than spending some time doing something that brings you bliss with someone you love...especially when that someone happens to be your child.
We spent the rest of the morning and into the afternoon walking the beach as a family, shopping from some vendors sharing drinks and swimming in the waves. Now the boys are hunkered in watching a movie before we go out for another round of pool and ocean fun...the waves are roaring and the boogie boards are calling Vominos Amigos!
