A while back the Snickerdoodles wine club hit Monashee U-Brew in Lumby to bottle many a batches of fun and fruity wines for summer.
I am a newbie to making wine but Laree and June made the process easy peasy and so fun. We made batches of Strawberry Reisling, Green apple Gewurztraminer and more creative blends like Lychee Green Tea, Loquat Ginger and Mango Mint. All were yummy and fresh and so inexpensive to make compared to buying at the liquor store. I also like the fact that my bottles can be re-used over and over.
Trust me, I have had some wretched homemade wines in my day. You know the ones your neighbour gives you that he made in his basement that smell like vinegar? I like to use them to marinate a roast in!
I actually lost my shirt in a poker tournament once thanks to some super powerful home brew my friend's Dad kept filling my glass with. Yes I could have not drank it, but he was adorable in a Mr. Miyage way and kept nodding and smiling as I sipped. It seemed to make him so happy. Sneaky guy, in hindsight he was probably just trying to win my moula with his devil's nectar. Next time I am bringing a big Starbucks and keeping my buy in.
So, since I was pleasantly surprised with our wine selection, we went ahead and ordered some beer for an early Father's Day gift for hubbie. He's a big fan of Guiness, so we ordered a batch of Kettle Stout beer. Last week the boys and I went to bottle and cap the batch.
You gotta admit they are super cute. Yes, they were nasty buggers to fill and cap but it wasn't too bad since I had my two guys helping and June meticulously filling.
I was super nervous for hubbie to try it as it was a lot of beer if he didn't like it but he was very pleased with his Father's Day stout...I don't like beer but I actually even like it ice cold with a splash of blackberry syrup.
It's not just me from our group to catch the U-Brew bug...most everyone out of the fourteen of us have ordered more batches. I have some more wine on the go now...a nice red to cellar for fall and I think we might have to start one of their special Apple Lime Cerveza beers for summer gatherings.
